Question: “Can you claim for an NP consult and CDM/practice nurse items (eg; 82205 and 721+11707) in the same visit (where all items are performed by the same clinician)?

Answer: Theoretically, yes. A clinician may act as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) for one reason and switch to being a Practice Nurse (PN) to address other clinical issues all in the same consultation. There is no outright prohibition on billing a 721 (GPMP) + 10997 (PN) and an NP number on the same day.

However, from my experience, this billing pattern is likely to be scrutinised by Medicare. Explaining this billing pattern will present difficulties. Scenarios when a clinician is not wrong but becomes a subject of scrutiny by Medicare are not uncommon. I wrote about that here.
